Wright ready to return with new helmet
His first round of batting practice complete, David Wright was casually jogging from first to second base Sunday morning when he was struck in the left leg by a ball hit by Luis Castillo. No problem. He paused, continued running after another pitch, then headed to the clubhouse to get a helmet.
The freak accident had little to do with the additional gear Wright retrieved. In the wake of the concussion he suffered Aug. 15, he has been told by doctors to wear a helmet during batting practice. He had forgotten.
Assigned to the disabled list beginning the day after the injury, Wright expects to return to active duty Tuesday night when the Mets play the first of three games against the Rockies in Denver. When he plays — and when he again takes batting practice — he may be wearing a helmet of a different kind.

Surgery to sideline Perez for season
Eyebrows no longer arch when the Mets place a player on the disabled list, nor when they announce that one of those players is out for the year. These days, a trip to the doctor usually precedes something worse, as it has for Johan Santana and Carlos Delgado and now, among a dozen or so others, for Oliver Perez.
The Mets on Wednesday placed Perez on the disabled list with “patellar tendon tendinosis” in his right knee, a condition that a team spokesman described as chronic tendinitis. Under the recommendation of Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek, Perez will undergo surgery to correct the condition and will miss the remainder of the season.

Mets hurlers Putz, Perez suffer setbacks
Merely days after announcing they expected to activate setup man J.J. Putz next week in Colorado, the Mets received yet another unexpected dose of bad news.
“I’m not optimistic that he’ll pitch again this season,” manager Jerry Manuel said, and later that day, his fears were confirmed.
The Mets announced late Tuesday that an MRI revealed new fraying and a slight tear to the ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow.
Though Putz will not undergo an additional procedure, he will not pitch again this year.

Johan scratched, to see doctor Tuesday
Mets players said Monday they expect Johan Santana will require surgery on his left elbow to repair whatever malady has prompted the club to scratch the pitcher from his scheduled start against the Marlins in Miami on Tuesday. Instead of making his 26th start, Santana is to have his elbow examined by Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek. And, if his teammates’ sense of the situation is right, his next start likely will be next season.
The Mets offered minimal information, i.e., no specific diagnosis or theories, about the problem that manager Jerry Manuel said began to develop before the All-Star break. But Mike Pelfrey, Santana’s fellow starter, said, “I don’t think anyone expects good news.” And Jeff Francoeur said he anticipates Santana will require surgery after speaking with the pitcher in the clubhouse Monday.

Mets seek relief for ‘pen from Parnell
Oliver Perez lost one game for the Mets on Sunday. The Mets hope Perez’s inability to get out of the first inning doesn’t also cost them the series finale with the Phillies on Monday afternoon at Citi Field.
Even after a superb day from the bullpen and a near comeback in Sunday’s 9-7 loss, the Mets will have to deal with the residue of Perez’s 47-pitch, two-out performance. Perez’s early exit — the first time a Mets starter departed a game in the first inning since Perez did it last June — put a heavy burden on the already sagging shoulders of the Mets’ bullpen. Nelson Figueroa, Pat Misch, Sean Green and Elmer Dessens all pitched in to complete the final 8 1/3 innings Sunday.

Wagner eager to show Mets what he can do
Billy Wagner has been in the Mets’ clubhouse since Sunday, and the closer, who underwent Tommy John ligament-replacement surgery last September, is getting a little eager.
Wagner is back and healthy, 11 months after he last pitched in a game for the Mets. He is scheduled to be activated from the disabled list either Thursday or Friday.
That activation will start Wagner’s audition, both for the end of this season and all of the next, though the Mets reportedly placed him on waivers on Wednesday. If he clears those waivers by Friday afternoon, as expected, he can be traded to any Major League club. Any team that claims him would have until Tuesday to work out a deal with the Mets.

Wright leads Mets’ trio of Aaron nominees
Through the travails that have marked the Mets’ 2009 season, All-Star third baseman David Wright, second baseman Luis Castillo and outfielder Angel Pagan have delivered some good news with their bats.
While Wright recovers from his harrowing Aug. 15 beaning, he joins Castillo and Pagan in receiving special notice for their efforts. The trio has been chosen as the Mets’ nominees for the Hank Aaron Award, baseball’s most prestigious honor for offensive prowess.
The Hank Aaron Award, presented by Sharp, is awarded annually to the best overall offensive performer in each league, with each club having three nominees. This is the seventh consecutive year that fans have had a voice in selecting the award winners.

Mets find themselves in the role of spoiler
It was in the spring of 2004 that Mets owner Fred Wilpon first talked about playing “meaningful games” in September. The Mets had finished in last place in both ‘02 and ‘03, and Wilpon was setting a reasonable goal for the team.
It was a bar the Mets reached in 2005 and exceeded in ‘06. The past two Septembers have included games that were all too meaningful for the Mets, who lost division leads late in consecutive years.
The end of this season promises to be different, but for all the wrong reasons. Sitting eight games under .500 and with all four of their offensive stars on the disabled list, the Mets seem resigned to the fact that their season will end on Oct. 4.

Thompson's suspension pleases Wright
David Wright avoids awkward and controversial situations whenever possible. In the sixth inning of Wednesday’s 9-0 Mets win over the Cardinals, he had to avoid something else — a fastball from pitcher Brad Thompson that would have struck him in the head had he not ducked. And when Thompson was suspended and fined by Major League Baseball on Thursday, Wright didn’t avoid the topic.
“Obviously, when you do something that isn’t right, you should be punished for it,” Wright said on Thursday. The punishment was a three-day suspension and a fine, the amount not announced.
Wright was certain Thompson had intended to throw at him. So, too, was Bob Watson, vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball, apparently. Wright was also certain that Thompson hadn’t cared whether the pitch hit the target.
