Mets find themselves in the role of spoiler
It was in the spring of 2004 that Mets owner Fred Wilpon first talked about playing “meaningful games” in September. The Mets had finished in last place in both ‘02 and ‘03, and Wilpon was setting a reasonable goal for the team.
It was a bar the Mets reached in 2005 and exceeded in ‘06. The past two Septembers have included games that were all too meaningful for the Mets, who lost division leads late in consecutive years.
The end of this season promises to be different, but for all the wrong reasons. Sitting eight games under .500 and with all four of their offensive stars on the disabled list, the Mets seem resigned to the fact that their season will end on Oct. 4.
