As everyone knows by now, K-Rod will have season ending surgery following a fight with his father-in-law. Presumably due to embarrassment the Mets are looking to completely cut ties with the closer.

The Mets are hoping the incident will give them the ability to not only withhold the remaining money owed to him this season, but to also allow them to void the remainder of his contract.

All I can say is wow. Only the Mets, right? It seems the Mets are always in the news for all the wrong reasons. How does one franchise continue to embarrass itself on a regular basis?

Of course, this had to happen during K-Rod’s best stretch in his brief tenure with the Mets. It is the perfect example of the Mets doing all the wrong things on and off the field.

Now we have to hinge our remote playoff hopes on Takahashi’s ability to close games.

This news is tough to hear on its own, but what makes it so painful is it is compounded with everything else the Mets have done since Beltran’s strikeout in game seven of the NLCS in 2006.

Remember that? The playoffs, success, hope.

I think that is the biggest problem for this team. When something goes wrong no fan can look at it as an isolated incident. It is just another thing to tack on to the list. It is why more and more I think the Mets need a complete overhaul at the end of the season. Fire prominent members in the front office and coaching staff and more importantly replace them with people outside of the organization. There should be no trace of 2007 on this team, with the only exceptions Jose Reyes and David Wright.

It is time for a new look for this franchise.

One of the players career looked like it was over, one of them hasn’t had a good year since he was in the National League, and the last comeback player had a power outage last year. 3. David Wright, New York Mets: Wright has his groove back! After a disapointing season last year for him and his team Wright has found his way once again and is helping the Mets make a run at the first place Braves. Wright only belted 10 home runs last year and 72 RBI’s, but he still hit .307, which isn’t bad. The Mets expect Wright to be their power bat in the lineup though, which is why last year was a down year for Wright. Not to worry, Wright is leading the National League in home runs with 50 and has two more home runs than last year already, with 12. Wright has helped the Mets move to within a half a game behind the first place Braves. Wright is leading his team with average, RBI’s, home runs, on base percentage, slugging, and runs.

For all the heat Omar Minaya got over the off-season, it is about time we give him some credit. While it was definitely warranted to question him in the past, Minaya has looked over a farm system that has provided some quality players for the big league team this season. I am talking about first baseman Ike Davis, and starting pitchers Mike Pelfrey and Jonathon Niese.

Ike Davis has solidified first base for the Mets, a position that has not seen a full season of production since 2006. Carlos Delgado never picked up his play in 2007 and while he went on a tear the latter half of 2008, his bat was pretty much non-existent the first half of the season. With the injury to Daniel Murphy the 2010 season was looking like much of the same with journeymen Mike Jacobs and Fernando Tatis splitting time at the position. Luckily for the Mets Davis had hit well enough in Spring Training and the start of the season for the AAA Buffalo Bisons that there was little resistance to calling him up. While he is barely hitting .260 on the year, he has still provided power with 7 home-runs, great defense, and more importantly…hope for the future.

Pelfrey has flat out dominated from the start of the season. I do not think it is a stretch to say that I feel more confident when he takes the mound than when Johan Santana does. All Pelfrey has done is go 9-1 on the season with a 2.39 ERA. He has given the team the 1-2 punch they have needed, and gives the team loads of confidence every time he takes the mound.

Finally there is Niese. He came up last season and pitched pretty well, but suffered a nasty hamstring injury during his third start since the call-up. The fear was he would not be able to recover enough to warrant a spot in the rotation to start the season. That fear was put aside early as he pitched so effectively during Spring Training that Jerry Manuel put him in the second spot following Santana. During the season Niese has managed to keep the optimism going with a stat-line that reads: 3-2 3.61 ERA 45 K/ 19 BB. To follow that up, Niese had only one blemish in his last start, a double in the third inning. Despite that hit Niese was perfect in a complete game effort where he shut-out the Padres.

Since David Wright and Jose Reyes were called up quite a while ago, the Mets have failed to add impact players to their big league team. This is Pelfrey’s third season, but following last year his career did not look as promising. While it has only been a few months, at this point it looks like Minaya has done a better job with the farm system than anyone has given him credit for. Not to mention the great acquisitions of Angel Pagan, Rod Barajas, Henry Blanco, Hisanori Takahashi, and RA Dickey.

When I picked my team, I only considered their contributions while a member of the Mets. If they played longer for the Mets, I gave them a slight bump in rankings since their impact on the Mets should be greater than someone playing only a couple seasons. As a general note, I started watching the Mets around 1985-86 so my choices will be biased towards Mets who have played in the 80s or later.

My squad contains one player at each position, five starters and a relief pitcher/closer. I listed other people I considered in the running for each position. I also added a link to some of our sports memorabilia by each of my choices..

OK.. Here is my all-time Mets squad.

Catcher – Mike Piazza
Also in the running: Gary Carter, Todd Hundley

1B – Keith Hernandez
Also in the running: Carlos Delgado, John Olerud

2B – Edgardo Alfonso
Also in the running: Jeff Kent, Wally Backman

SS – Jose Reyes (No Mets shortstop was even close)

3B – David Wright (He has only scratched the surface of his potential)
Also in the running: Howard Johnson, Robin Ventura

LF – Kevin McReynolds (This was a tough one.. There was not a clear favorite in my mind)
Also in the running: Cleon Jones, Cliff Floyd

CF – Carlos Beltran
Also in the running: Lenny Dykstra, Tommie Agee, Mookie Wilson, Lee Mazzilli

RF – Darryl Strawberry
Also in the running: Rusty Staub

Starting Pitchers –
1. Tom Seaver (Top 2 were obvious but I am somewhat biased towards players who played after 1986 and probably would have chosen a few older pitchers had I actually seen them pitch a little more)
2. Doc Gooden
3. Johan Santana
4. David Cone
5. Al Leiter
Also in the running: Jerry Koosman, Pedro Martinez, Tom Glavine, Jon Matlack

RELIEF PITCHER – John Franco (Captain and long time Met.. got the benefit of the doubt even though I remember a few rough spots for him in his last year or two. The other ones I listed are dominating pitchers but had less actual time with the Mets than John Franco. I like KROD so far, and can see him moving up here if he does well for the Mets for the next couple seasons)
2. Francisco Rodriguez
3. Billy Wagner
Also in the running: Armando Benitez, Jesse Orosco, Roger McDowell, Jeff Reardon, Randy Myers, Tug McGraw

– Now that I went out on a limb.. anyone else want to try..?

It was fitting that yesterday's 5-1 win over Houston, the penultimate game of the Mets' sorry season suffered through a rain delay: The entire injury-riddled campaign has been like water torture that just wouldn't end. Manuel is determined to make sure Wright does just that, admitting the latter developed "phobias" -- Manuel's word, not ours -- after getting beaned by a 93 mph Matt Cain fastball on Aug. 15. He's hit just .242 since, looking uneasy at the plate and admitting he still thinks about the beaning.

So, with Wright showing modest improvement in his last three games -- 5-for-12 with three doubles and three RBIs -- Manuel didn't want to risk his star getting drilled by errant Yorman Bazardo (19 BB in 27 1/3 innings pitched).

His first round of batting practice complete, David Wright was casually jogging from first to second base Sunday morning when he was struck in the left leg by a ball hit by Luis Castillo. No problem. He paused, continued running after another pitch, then headed to the clubhouse to get a helmet.
The freak accident had little to do with the additional gear Wright retrieved. In the wake of the concussion he suffered Aug. 15, he has been told by doctors to wear a helmet during batting practice. He had forgotten.

Assigned to the disabled list beginning the day after the injury, Wright expects to return to active duty Tuesday night when the Mets play the first of three games against the Rockies in Denver.
Through the travails that have marked the Mets' 2009 season, All-Star third baseman David Wright, second baseman Luis Castillo and outfielder Angel Pagan have delivered some good news with their bats. While Wright recovers from his harrowing Aug. 15 beaning, he joins Castillo and Pagan in receiving special notice for their efforts. The trio has been chosen as the Mets' nominees for the Hank Aaron Award, baseball's most prestigious honor for offensive prowess.

The Hank Aaron Award, presented by Sharp, is awarded annually to the best overall offensive performer in each league, with each club having three nominees. This is the seventh consecutive year that fans have had a voice in selecting the award winners.

David Wright avoids awkward and controversial situations whenever possible. In the sixth inning of Wednesday’s 9-0 Mets win over the Cardinals, he had to avoid something else — a fastball from pitcher Brad Thompson that would have struck him in the head had he not ducked. And when Thompson was suspended and fined by Major League Baseball on Thursday, Wright didn’t avoid the topic.

“Obviously, when you do something that isn’t right, you should be punished for it,” Wright said on Thursday. The punishment was a three-day suspension and a fine, the amount not announced.

Wright was certain Thompson had intended to throw at him. So, too, was Bob Watson, vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball, apparently. Wright was also certain that Thompson hadn’t cared whether the pitch hit the target.
