Wright looking forward to 2010
It was fitting that yesterday’s 5-1 win over Houston, the penultimate game of the Mets’ sorry season suffered through a rain delay: The entire injury-riddled campaign has been like water torture that just wouldn’t end.
Manuel is determined to make sure Wright does just that, admitting the latter developed “phobias” — Manuel’s word, not ours — after getting beaned by a 93 mph Matt Cain fastball on Aug. 15. He’s hit just .242 since, looking uneasy at the plate and admitting he still thinks about the beaning.
So, with Wright showing modest improvement in his last three games — 5-for-12 with three doubles and three RBIs — Manuel didn’t want to risk his star getting drilled by errant Yorman Bazardo (19 BB in 27 1/3 innings pitched).

Jose Reyes and Mets Ticket Prices Going Under the Knife
The Mets may finally be getting the hang of this public relations thing. The team announced Thursday that the average season ticket for 2010 would cost 10 percent less than it did this season, with cuts of as much as 20 percent in some locations. According to the team, every season ticket holder will wind up with a lower invoice than they had this year, although per-game ticket prices will remain the same in some instances.
The Mets say that the decision was made in deference to the economy, which is a lot easier than saying that we’re charging you less because of how awful we were this season. The economic realities of 2009 were certainly a consideration, but someone in the Mets realized that they’ve got a pretty ticked off fanbase these days and keeping them in the building was going to take more than the promise that things would better next year when all the players were healthy.
That was true even before the news that Jose Reyes tore his hamstring became public knowledge, but was twice as true when the ticket pricing announcement was actually made. One of the linchpins that the Mets could use as a selling point for a brighter tomorrow is now a gigantic question mark as the offseason gets underway, raising the possibility that the Mets could be looking for help at shortstop in addition to all of the other holes that need filling around the league.

Reyes takes indoor batting practice
Mets shortstop Jose Reyes took indoor batting practice before Monday’s game against Atlanta and still holds out hope for a return to the field before the season ends, according to the New York Daily News.
Reyes, who has not played since May 20 and was diagnosed with a complete tear of his right hamstring last month, told the Daily News that he will continue taking batting practice for the remainder of the week, and will have a key running session on the field Friday. Should the running session go well, Reyes told the paper he will attempt to play in one or the two final games next week

Johan scratched, to see doctor Tuesday
Mets players said Monday they expect Johan Santana will require surgery on his left elbow to repair whatever malady has prompted the club to scratch the pitcher from his scheduled start against the Marlins in Miami on Tuesday. Instead of making his 26th start, Santana is to have his elbow examined by Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek. And, if his teammates’ sense of the situation is right, his next start likely will be next season.
The Mets offered minimal information, i.e., no specific diagnosis or theories, about the problem that manager Jerry Manuel said began to develop before the All-Star break. But Mike Pelfrey, Santana’s fellow starter, said, “I don’t think anyone expects good news.” And Jeff Francoeur said he anticipates Santana will require surgery after speaking with the pitcher in the clubhouse Monday.

Thompson's suspension pleases Wright
David Wright avoids awkward and controversial situations whenever possible. In the sixth inning of Wednesday’s 9-0 Mets win over the Cardinals, he had to avoid something else — a fastball from pitcher Brad Thompson that would have struck him in the head had he not ducked. And when Thompson was suspended and fined by Major League Baseball on Thursday, Wright didn’t avoid the topic.
“Obviously, when you do something that isn’t right, you should be punished for it,” Wright said on Thursday. The punishment was a three-day suspension and a fine, the amount not announced.
Wright was certain Thompson had intended to throw at him. So, too, was Bob Watson, vice president of on-field operations for Major League Baseball, apparently. Wright was also certain that Thompson hadn’t cared whether the pitch hit the target.

Right hamstring tear ends Niese's season
Mets starter Jonathon Niese is out for the season after a Wednesday magnetic resonance imaging exam revealed a complete tear of the right upper hamstring tendon from the bone, a club statement said.
Niese, who was examined at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, will have surgery and is expected to be ready for Spring Training next year.
Niese left Wednesday’s 9-0 win over the Cardinals at Citi Field in the top of the second inning after stretching to receive a throw while covering first base on a potential 3-6-1 double play. He went into a split, missed the bag and collapsed moments later while trying to throw a practice pitch with manager Jerry Manuel and the team training staff on the mound. The left-hander, who was 1-1 with a 4.21 ERA in five starts this season, was helped off the mound and into the clubhouse.

Reyes returns to NY with leg discomfort
Shortstop Jose Reyes returned to New York on Monday night with continued discomfort in his right leg. Reyes, who has not played a game for the Mets since May 20, was scheduled to be examined by doctors at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York on Tuesday.
Reyes had been making progress in his rehabilitation from a slight tear in his hamstring before last Friday, when he did not run the bases in Port St. Lucie, Fla., as scheduled. Mets manager Jerry Manuel called it a setback at the time.
